If you want to Metal Detect you would be well advised to join the National Council For Metal Detecting. PMDG is my local Detectorist Group, Abbey Shakoor (Group Organiser) is always happy to welcome new members. He's a great guy along with detecting raises loads for charity! The PAS is more than a database of finds. The local officer in your area will be happy to identify your 'treasures' as well as adding them to the National Database.

If you want to Metal Detect on beaches you will need a permit, it's easy to apply and it's free! Your local historical society can be a good source of information when researching a potential site for Detecting. All my Metal Detecting kit came from Regton, I have found them a good Company to deal with.

Vincent Thurkettle runs courses on Gold Panning and Prospecting. Having been on one of the courses I can highly recommend them! There are a number of suppliers of Gold Panning equipment but this is where my kit came from. One of EarthWatches many 'eco' projects is organising Archeological digs. I got involved with the dig at 'Arbeia' a Roman site in South Shields. It's well worth checking out their site to see if anything interests you.
