Welcome to my Pan 'n' Scan website. Hi, I'm Kevin and my reasons for setting up this website are three fold, firstly it's a way of demonstrating to Landowners that I have a genuine interest in history, that I respect any property I Detect, second, it is a way to display my finds and hopefully get more information about them from people more skilled in 'finds' identification than I am. Finally it is a source of information for anyone who would like to get into Metal Detecting or who is simply interested in history. You can read about the methods I use for Detecting by going to my 'Detect' page. If you would like your land Detecting please send an email to me at panandscan@btinternet.com or ring me on 07778 525689 I've been interested in history since I was at school so Metal Detecting was a natural hobby to take up. Detecting for the last couple of years I have been surprised, intrigued and delighted by the 'artifacts' I have found. Many, although not intrinsically valuable have a wealth of social history behind them. |

Interested in getting into Metal Detecting? | ||
For anyone who is interested in getting into Metal Detecting I would strongly suggest they register with the 'National Council for Metal Detecting', join your local Metal Detecting club, I'm a member of 'Preston Metal Detecting Group' and if you are wanting to Detect on the beaches get a permit for 'Metal Detecting on Crown Estate Foreshore'. These and other useful links can be found on my 'Links' page.
Along with registering with and joining these organisations I've been on an archeological dig at Arbeia, a Roman Fort in South Shields (organised by 'earthwatch') to get an insight into how professional archaeologist approach a site, record the site and deal with artifacts, a Gold Panning course in Scotland, more of Gold Panning later and my latest experience learning basic stone carving, a course in Yorkshire to understand how to recognise 'worked' stone |

Panning for Gold! | ||
The ultimate metal find has to be gold and Gold Panning has again always fascinated me. When I'm Detecting in geological areas that may also have naturally occurring gold deposits I'll combine my two interests, sadly I've not had a great deal of success to date but I live in hope! For anyone interested in Gold Panning I found the course I went on, 'Gold Panning and Prospecting' run by Vincent Thurkettle superb. Living in Lancashire I'm not well place for 'gold rich rocks' but if you live in the right sort of area I'm sure you would be successful!
